KL Fredericks, Senior/Supervisory International Trade Specialist, US Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, US & Foreign Commercial Service (USDOC/ITA/USCS) was appointed Director of the Harlem US Export Assistance Center (Harlem USEAC) in 1995 by Ron Brown, Secretary of Commerce. Ms. Fredericks and her staff assist small and medium-size companies in Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, the empowerment zones and minority-owned companies in the New York region with their export endeavors. For the USCS, she is also responsible for the Franchise and Food & Beverage industries in all of New York City. KL also counsels US companies on international procurement procedures and opportunities with the MultiLateral Development Banks, UN/Humanitarian Relief/NGO organizations and franchise companies across the country. She is a NASBITE International ‘Certified Global Business Professional’ (CGBP) and has achieved advanced ‘FNA’ status (Franchise Knowledge Accreditation) from the International Franchise Association (IFA). Ms. Fredericks serves as the DOC liaison to the board of NEXCO, an international trade education association and has advised the NY District Export Council. She has received the Commerce Department’s “Bronze Medal Award”, twice, for her work with the Russia/NIS Health Industries Team and for her ‘ImaginAsian’ Hong Kong film industry programs. She is an active member of the Commercial Service’s AME (Africa/Middle East Team, served as moderator/panel coordinator for ACCESS conference programs), Global Franchising (served as US-lead for The Franchise Show– London and IFE CS program coordinator) and Agri-Business (coordinates joint seminars/meetings/training with USDA partners, IBP activities and outreach to food-related organizations/trade shows – Summer Fancy, NPEE, KosherFest, restaurant shows and other food industry events) Teams and acts as CS liaison to many international trade organizations. In 2013, KL coordinated and led a four country/five city/10-day franchise trade mission to UAE/Egypt/Jordan/Qatar. She served on the standards committee for the NASBITE International CGBP program. KL continues to collaborate with ITAC (DOC’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) local partner – ExporTech program) and NYC area Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) on export training programs for manufacturing and service companies and companies/organizations providing international trade services. She continues to serve as a member of the World Trade Week NYC steering committee and the agency liaison to NEXCO, a CS partner organization. Ms. Fredericks began her professional career as a high school Home Economics teacher and Drama director after completing undergraduate studies at Montclair State College, NJ. With an MA from Rutgers University, KL moved to New York City and established a custom theatrical costume design business – KL Fredericks-New York – catering to off & off-off Broadway, mimes, dancers, small independent films and commercials. After an MBA in International Marketing from Baruch College, City University of New York and an internship at the US Department of Commerce (DOC), New York District Office, she launched her latest career. Teaching is a passion of KL’s and she has taught, lectured, developed curriculum and programs, counseled and been a speaker at many New York area colleges/universities, industry training programs and international trade programs and events.
